food & drink

The Dales Haven is situated in the market town of Leyburn, home to an annual food and drink festival, celebrating the best in Yorkshire produce. The town regularly hosts farmers’ markets. The area is renowned for great food, locally produced beers and good cooking. It’s heaven to explore. Here are just a few of our favourites.

Campbells of Leyburn

This is a little gem - or actually a bit of a big gem - which surprises all who visit for the first time. It's a family-owned supermarket selling a wide variety of products that you can usually only find in specialist food shops. Go upstairs and you discover one of the finest wine departments in the North of England. From £5 a bottle to over £100 for fine French vintages.

Dales Meat and Pie Company

Just across the road from the Dales Haven, this shop is worth a visit just for the name - and you won't be disappointed. Some of the best quality cuts of meat you'll find anywhere - and a range of irresistible pies.

Leyburn pubs and restaurants

Whatever you fancy, there's a good chance you will find it in Leyburn. We have Indian, Chinese, Italian, new English and traditional Yorkshire pubs. The Saffron Indian restaurant receives plaudits from all who dine there - and was described as one of the best Indian restaurants outside London by the CEO of Yorkshire Tourist Board Gary Verity.  The Sandpiper Restaurant serves some of the best new English cuisine to be found in Wensleydale and Penley's Bistro also offers diners some of the best food around (the smoked haddock risotto is heaven on a plate). For lovers of pizza and pasta there is Giovanni's which serves most of the Italian classics.

Masham breweries

Nearby Masham is home to two famous Yorkshire breweries, The Black Sheep Brewery and Theakston’s Brewery. Masham is an attractive market town and both breweries are worth a visit. Theakston’s Old Perculiar is a particular Yorkshire favourite.

Betty’s Café and Tea Rooms

Take a pleasant trip to North Yorkshire’s county town Northallerton and visit the delightful Betty’s Café and Tea Rooms. Betty’s is renowned for the quality of its food and old fashioned service. There’s nothing else quite like it. A particular favourite of ours is the Yorkshire fat rascal – sort of a cross between a scone and rock cake – well worth indulging in.

Lewis and Cooper

While visiting Northallerton, pop into Lewis and Cooper’s, a food lover’s delight. Food heaven no less. Fine wines and every conceivable speciality food has made it a sweet shop for grown-ups. Spoil yourselves with a fabulous Lewis and Cooper hamper or stock up for Christmas with a rich plum pudding.

Brymor Ice Cream

If you’re an ice cream sort of person, take the opportunity of visiting the farm where Brymor Ice Cream is produced and meet the herd of cows that produce the milk for one of the best-tasting ice cream around.

The Little Chocolate Shop

See delicious chocolates being made and try some for yourselves. The shop is situated on Leyburn business park and the chocolates make a refreshing change from the usual mass-produced confectionery. Great for gifts too.
