The Dales Haven is situated in Leyburn in the Yorkshire Dales where James Herriot regularly visited during his famous career as a vet. It is en route between the market town of Thirsk, North Yorkshire, where James Herriot lived and practised, and the village of Askrigg, where the television series All Creatures Great and Small was filmed.
The real James Herriot
Alf Wight was the vet and author who created the character of James Herriot in the autobiographical tales of life in the Yorkshire Dales. The James Herriot books are loved and enjoyed by readers all over the world.
The James Herriot Centre
The original Skeldale House in the fictional town of Darrowby where James Herriot first lived and also worked alongside Siegfried and Tristan, is now a museum. Step back in time into the world of Mrs Pumphrey and Tricki-Woo. An absolute joy to visit.

Thirsk
Known in the Herriot books as Darrowby, Thirsk is the town that real life vet and author Alf Wight fell in love with, met his wife and brought up his children. An attractive cobbled marketplace remains the signature feature unchanged since the time of James Herriot. Also visit St Mary’s Parish Church, where James married his sweetheart Helen.
Askrigg
The charming village of Askrigg was chosen for the setting of Darrowby in the memorable TV adaptation of the Herriot books. Driving from the Dales Haven, you will be enthralled by the stunning scenery that so bewitched the vet and author as he travelled from farm to farm
Round and about
Take the opportunity to tour and explore. Visit the Asygarth waterfalls, Bolton Castle, where Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned and stroll along Leyburn’s Shaw, an escarpment with spectacular views of Wensleydale.
