Mary Queen of ScotsLegend has it that during her two-year incarceration in Bolton Castle, near Leyburn, North Yorkshire, Mary Queen of Scots tried to escape but was betrayed by her shawl that she dropped when fleeing her guards.

The Shawl

During the reign of her cousin Queen Elizabeth, Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned in Bolton Castle for two years. Situated just a few miles from the Dales Haven, the castle is open to visitors and is well worth a visit.

Take the opportunity of visiting the ruins of Jervaulx Abbey a powerful reminder of Britain’s monastic heritage. Also nearby Middleham Castle, the boyhood home of Richard III, and Richmond Castle with its tales of King Arthur and Robin Hood. The countryside around has changed little since the time of Mary Queen of Scots and offers great opportunities for touring on foot, bicycle or by car.
