The phrase “Cracking cheese, Gromit” is one of the memorable pearls of wisdom spoken by Wallace about Wensleydale cheese in the hilarious series of award-winning animated films about one particular funny man and his even funnier dog.
Wensleydale cheese is produced in the town of Hawes, North Yorkshire, where the creamery is open to the public. It’s a great place to visit, while staying at the Dales Haven, Leyburn.
There’s a visitor centre, with a refrigerated shop selling all kinds of different Wensleydale cheese, including a delicious Wensleydale blue. There’s also the opportunity to buy a selection of Wallace and Gromit memorabilia.

Visit nearby Jervaulx Abbey and get a taste of where the original Wensleydale cheese was first made. The French Cistercian monks that founded the abbey brought the art of cheese-making to the area. The abbey was founded in 1156 and its ruins serve as a powerful reminder of England’s monastic heritage.
While in Yorkshire it would be crime not to acquaint yourselves with some other food and drink delights that the area has to offer. Not for nothing is Leyburn home to one of England’s great annual food and drink festivals.
